ROBOTANISTS' haunting melodies and seamless blend of soulful indie rock, driving beats and lush synth pop have garnished them comparisons to buzz bands like Florence and the Machine, Metric, The National and The XX, as well as modern legends like Radiohead and My Bloody Valentine.
Comprised of songwriters Sarah Ellquist DeBlanke (Vocals & Keys) and Daniel DeBlanke (Guitar, Keys) and rhythm section Keith Boyarsky (Bass) and Preston Scott Phillips (Drums), ROBOTANISTS spent 2009 spreading their big choruses and delicate prose across North America on tour and on the radio. Their breakthrough single “Wait a Minute here” (from the self produced and released album, CLOSE DOWN THE WOODS) topped charts in Los Angeles (KCRW, KROQ) and other major cities across the US, alongside bands like Phoenix, Grizzly Bear, The Dead Weather, Dirty Projectors and more, earning them a slot at CMJ in 2009 and on the ballot for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards Nominations.
The group kicked off 2010 with their second album, a collection of covers called SHAPES AND VARIATIONS. The album is the Silver Lake quartet’s critically acclaimed ode to Los Angeles, featuring 7 reharmonized and rearranged tracks by Jay-Z, Lykke Li, The Black Keys, Joe Jackson, Bryan Adams, and more. Through SHAPES, Daniel DeBlanke and Sarah Ellquist rise as an arranging tour de force, reworking material from the popular zeitgeist and giving it new life, full of all of the heartache, hopes and dreams that define the “City of Angels.”
SHAPES AND VARIATIONS was soon followed by ROBOTANISTS’ first 12″, aptly titled, CURRENT. Released in September 2010, the record is a “best of” album that includes the group’s favorite selections from each of their first two records.
The band recently recorded their next album, PLANS IN PROGRESS, in Los Angeles, with producer / engineer Danny Kalb (Beck, Ben Harper, Karen O), which is set to be released in February 2011!
